Navigating the hybrid working job market: tips for candidates

2024 predictions on hybrid working:

It is most likely believed that we will never return to the pre-pandemic five-day a week in office stint. Yet, data is suggesting that a lot of companies are now rallying for more return to in-office days. According to Forbes, ‘The argument is that being together in person encourages collaboration, drives productivity, and reduces layoffs when downsizing’

However, there are several reasons why this may not resonate favourably with employees, including affected work life balance, cost savings, flexibility preferences, and added commute stress (especially in London!)

As we are now full swing into 2024, data is showing that most UK businesses are continuing to offer hybrid working – with 80% of office-based businesses in London now offering this model of working. It is only expected to grow.

How candidates can navigate this hybrid working job market:

· Hybrid-work friendly skills: highlight your remote-friendly skills, such as proficiency in remote collaboration tools, strong written communication skills, and the ability to work independently, and this may allow you to stand out to flexible working employers during the job search.

· Hybrid-work readiness: in interviews, being able to assess your readiness for hybrid working by evaluating your communication skills, self-discipline, and ability to manage time effectively, ensures you are prepared for hybrid working.

· Hybrid-interview preparation: You can prepare for remote interviews by familiarizing yourself with video conference platforms, testing internet connections / equipment beforehand, and practising virtual interview techniques to make a positive impression on employers. This could range from
– choosing a suitable location
– dressing professionally
– maintaining eye contact and looking directly at the camera
– using nonverbal communication such as using hand gestures and facial expressions to convey enthusiasm and confidence.

· Understand expectations: clarify expectations with your employer regarding in-office working and working from home days. Ensure you understand all policies and guidelines related to hybrid working arrangements.

· Manage your time effectively: develop a schedule that allows you to balance remote work tasks with in-office responsibilities. Use tools like calendars to prioritize workloads and stay organised.

· Maintaining open communication: make sure to remember to communicate proactively with your manager and team members – keep them updated on your progress on tasks, availability, and any challenges you may be facing.

· Adapting your workspace: create a productive workspace at home that is conducive to remote work, with minimal distractions and access to necessary tools and resources.

· Stay engaged: Actively participate in team meetings, whether they are held in-person or virtually. Contribute ideas, ask questions, and don’t forget to engage with your colleagues to maintain a sense of connection and collaboration.
